"Pioneers Celebrate Golden Wedding"
Mr. and Mrs. Samuel H. Evenson celebrate 50th anniversary at Walker. A golden wedding of interest to many Pope County people took place at Walker, Minnesota on Wednesday, April 1st, when Mr. and Mrs. Samuel H. Evenson celebrated the event of half a century ago. The celebration came as a genuine surprise to Mr. and Mrs. Evenson. They had planned to return to their old home near Starbuck to celebrate the event on the 12th of April as it was not convenient to arrange fore everything until then. On Tuesday, the day before the wedding, their son, Clarence, took them to Bemidji and managed to delay the trip home until after dark. When the parents came home they found all their children there and also two brothers of Mrs. Evenson and their wives. This was the first happy surprise to have all the children home again. On Wednesday, April 1, at ten o'clock friends started to pour in to help celebrate the great event. A bountiful wedding dinner was served and an appropriate program was held during the afternoon. Rev. Gjerde of Bemidji who took the place of Rev. Magelson who was sick, was present during the day. A very delightful day was enjoyed by all who participated. Samuel H. Evenson and Ingri Disrud were married April 1, 1881 at the home of the bride, Mr. and Mrs. Thore Disrud in the town of Barsness, Pope County. The ceremony was performed by Rev. Jermstad. April 1, 1881 was a great contrast to April 1st of this year. At the time there was so much snow that the fences were covered and it was impossible to follow the roads. Many of the people who attended the wedding therefore came on skiis. Lien Brothers came twenty miles on skiis to attend the wedding. The family lived in Pope County until twenty-two years ago when they moved to Walker, Minnesota where they have made their home. Eleven children, seven girls and four boys blessed their home. All are living and well. On May 29, 1909 the family decided to move to Walker, Minnesota. They drove with two covered wagons, taking with them 5 horses, 24 head of cattle and 80 sheep. The adventure was like living a pioneer life over again as there were no roads to speak of in their new destination and the part of the country they covered going there. They arrived on June 6th. Since that time they have established themselves a comfortable home and have done their share in the development of the new country. Their children who were home to help them celebrate the happy event were: Mrs. H. O. Olson (Jennie), Terrace; Mrs. Floyd Robinson (Ida) of Brooten; Mrs. Alfred Erickson (Anna) Rice Lake, Wis.; Mrs. Sarah Berg, Starbuck; Mrs. J. O. Huset (Mabel), Long Prairie; Mrs. Adolph Brederson (Florence) Starbuck; Mrs. Lloyd Kennedy (Alice) Walker; Henry, Clarence and Gilman Evenson of Walker, and Emil Evenson of Terrace. Mr. and Mrs. Theo. Disrud and Mr. and Mrs. Henry Disrud, brothers of Mrs. Evenson were present at the golden wedding.
Glenwood Herald, April 9, 1931 "Former Pope Couple Have Golden Wedding"
At the golden wedding in Turtle Lake township, Cass County, Minn. April 1, 1931, people of the community started to gather at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel H. Evenson to help celebrate the 50th wedding anniversary of that worthy couple. On April 1, 1881 at the home of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Thore Disrud in Barsness township, Pope county, Minn., Mr. Samuel H. Evenson and Ingri Disrud were married by Rev. H. D. Hjermstad. The roads on that day were so bad that no teams could be used owing to the deep snow and drifts that completely covered the fences so the wedding guests mostly came on skiis up to 16 miles distant, such as Thorstein and Mikkel Lien, Samson Olson and Kristen Halvorson who all came on skiis the distance of 16 miles or more. Today April 1, 1931 we all used automobiles, have good roads only a little muddy in places but give no trouble. After their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Evenson continued to reside in Pope county until the spring of 1909 when they moved to Cass county, where they now resides. They have raised a family of 11 children, seven girls and four boys namely: Ida, Mrs. Floyd Robinson, Brooten, Minn.; Henry, Turtle Lake township; Jennie, Mrs. Hans Olson, Terrace, Minn.; Emil, Terrace, Minn.; Annie, Mrs. Alfred Erickson, Rice Lake, Wis.; Sarah, Mrs. Anton Berg, Starbuck, Minn.; Mabel, Mrs. J. O. Huset, Long Prairie, Minn.; Gilman, Turtle Lake township; Florence, Mrs. Adolph Bredeson, Starbuck, Minn.; Clarence at home and Alice, Mrs. Lloyd Kennedy, Walker, Minn. There are 38 grand children and 8 great grand children. Mr. and Mrs. Evenson started out with their family, household effects and stock with two covered wagons, bringing five horses, 24 head of cattle and 80 sheep on May the 28, arriving June 6, 1909. There were no roads from Cyphers to their new home so they had to chop down trees in order to get to their homestead. That was 22 years ago this spring. Quite a difference then and now eh. All the children and quite a few of the grand children also some of the great grand children were present at this golden wedding. A good program was arranged for the occasion. Speeches were made by Rev. Jerdee of Bemidji, Minn., Walter Arneson of St. Cloud, Minn. Ed Dahly made the presentation speech and was followed by Floyd Robinson of Brooten, Minn. Fifty years of married life was read by Miss Eleanor Arneson of Brooten. Several songs were sung by Edna and Ralph Dahly and Nora Christianson and three musical selections were rendered on two violins and piano by Hans Olson and Adolph Bredeson playing violins and Mrs. Bredeson on the piano. There were over two hundred guests present and a bounteous dinner was served by the guests. A sum of money, $75 in gold and $25 in silver was given Mr. and Mrs. Evenson by their relatives and friends, expressive of the high honor and esteem in which they are held.
60th wedding anniversary at Hope Lutheran Church in Walker MN
Pope County Tribune, April 10, 1941
"Have Sixtieth Wedding Celebration"
Program Held at Hope Lutheran Church at Walker Sunday, March 30.
Mr. and Mrs. Sam Evenson were honored on their 60th wedding anniversary Sunday, March 30, at Hope Lutheran Church, Walker. The altar was decorated with a beautiful basket of roses and carnations, the gift of their children.
The Rev. Alfred Gunderson, pastor of Hope Lutheran, brought the message at the morning festival service. He brought an inspirational message, using as his text, "Be ye therefore imitators of God, as beloved children; and walk in love, even as Christ also loved you, and gave himself up for us," taken from Ephesians 5:1-2. Following the service a delicious wedding dinner was served in the church parlors by the ladies aids. The tables were beautifully decorated in a pink and white color scheme. A lovely wedding cake, made and artistically decorated by Mr. J. O. Huset, was the centerpiece. At 2:30 o'clock, Rev. Gunderson presided at the following informal program: Prelude, "Wedding Day at Troldhaugen," Greig, Miss Adele Magelssen; Devotion, Rev. Gunderson; Song, "Sweet Hour of Prayer," by Delores Arneson of Hoffman, a great granddaughter; Recitation, "Nebuchadnezzar" by Violet Robinson of Brooten, a granddaughter; Piano Solo, "Chalet Girls Sunday", by Miss Naomi Magelssen; "To Grandpa and Grandma," a recitation by Janice Evenson, a granddaughter.
Rev. Gunderson, in addressing Mr. Evenson said, "Perhaps if you were to tell your wife what's on your heart today, you'd say it in the words of the poet:
"Now we shared our days of gladness And we'd met our days of pain, Times when sky was blue and cloudless; Then the long grey spells of rain. Days it seemed I couldn't travel, Not another weary mile Till I'd catch the glory shining, Out of mother's cheery smile. We've known the joy of children, Yes and had to lose a few (just two) And them we kept the longest-- Well, some ways we've lost them too. And somehow it came over me, How we'd traveled down the years, Till my eyes was sort o'blinded With a sudden mist of tears. Then settin' in that country house Where everything was fine, I stopped and says to mother, As I took her hand in mine, "We didn't have the fixin's, Nor the fuss and feathers too, But Mother, I got paradise that day I wedded you." So we'er back just where we started On that old-time wedding day, Just a trudgin' on together, Toward the sunset of life's way. And tho' hearts are sometimes weary Eyes grow dim and footsteps slow Still we hear love's song at twilight, Sweet as in the long ago."
Then Rev. Gunderson continued by reading excerpts from the family history, mentioning that Mr. and Mrs. Evenson were united in marriage on the first day of April 1881 at the bride's home in Barsness twp., Pope county, Minnesota by Rev. Hjermstad. Mr. Evenson was born in Dane county, Wis., June 9, 1859 to Mr. and Mrs. Hans Evenson. Mrs. Evenson was born April 18, 1863 to Tore and Guri Disrud in Valdrin, Norway. She came here with her parents when she was a year old. Thirteen children have been born to Mr. and Mrs. Evenson, eleven of whom are living and were all present at the anniversary Sunday. There are 45 grandchildren and 31 great grandchildren.
Mr. and Mrs. Evenson lived the first 27 years of their married life in Pope county; in 1909 they homesteaded near Walker where they now reside. A song "Jeg Elsker Dig" was sung by Mrs. C. F. Evenson. Mr. Arne Hovde spoke in behalf of the neighbors. Mr. Walter Arneson, of Hoffman spoke for the grandchildren. Mrs. Clarence Evenson of Walker spoke for the 11 "in-laws". Mrs. Mabel Huset of Parkers Prairie spoke for the children and presented a gift from the children to the parents. Miss Josephine McDonald read a poem, "Not Growing Old." The Hope Lutheran Church Choir, under the direction of Mrs. C. F. Evenson then sang "Finlandia" by Sebelius. Preceding the closing hymn and benediction, Rev. Gunderson presented a gift of silver to the Evensons from the relatives and friends.
Out of town relatives and friends present were the following: Mr. and Mrs. Henry Halvorson, Braham, Minn., (nephew to Mr. Evenson); Mrs. Clarence Swift, Waterville, Minn., (niece to Mr. Evenson); Henry Disrud and daughter, Glenore, Rolla, N. D. (brother of Mrs. Evenson); Mr. and Mrs. James Arneson and Cora Arneson of Brooten (grandchildren); Mrs. Ida Robinson and daughter, Violet, of Brooten (daughter and granddaughter); Mr. and Mrs. J. O. Huset and family of Parkers Prairie (daughter); Mr. and Mrs. Hans Olson, Terrace (daughter); Mr. and Mrs. Emil Evenson, Terrace (son); Mrs. Alfred Erickson, Rice Lake, Wis., (daughter); Mrs. Sarah Berg, Starbuck, (daughter); Mr. and Mrs. Walter Arneson and family, Hoffman, (grandson).
